Most People Shouldn't Drink Sports Drinks - Find Out Why

Posted on 11/13/2016 by Heather Erickson
An orange sports drink.Sports drinks were designed for a specific group of individuals. Those who were busting their butts doing something incredibly physically demanding that they were not able to stop when their body needed replenishment.

If you are simply thirsty, you are doing more harm than good by turning to a sports drink. Not only can they hurt your body, but they can also trash your oral health.

Sports Drinks Are Highly Acidic

The acid levels in sports drinks can create a lot of problems in your mouth. The acidic levels they leave behind can cause a lot of erosion of your teeth in a very short amount of time. As soon as you drink some, it washes your entire mouth in acid and starts to eat your tooth's enamel away.

Brushing right away after helps a bit, but more often than not, that is not possible. The longer the acid sits in your mouth, the more damage it can do.

Eventually, your enamel will be worn down to where your teeth will become highly sensitive to what you eat and drink, and it can even boost your levels of tooth decay.

If you want something to drink, opt for tap water. Your body needs water, and tap water gives you the extra fluoride you are likely already lacking. Fluoride gives your teeth a better fighting chance against decay, and helps to keep your teeth stronger when you do eat or drink the wrong foods.

Avoid sports drinks whenever possible. They are not good for you to drink regularly, and they can cause a lot of damage. Contact our office about your drinking habits if you are struggling to figure out something good to drink. They can explain to you how much of a hazard sports drink can be where your mouth is concerned.
