|Has your dentist recommended that you have a root canal in order to treat a badly infected tooth? If so, you may have heard some things about this procedure, but it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction when relying on word of mouth. Read on to arm yourself with some important facts about root canals.
The Procedure Should Be Relatively Comfortable
Many people automatically assume that root canals are going to be extremely painful, but the process is actually designed to alleviate your pain.
Before your root canal, your dentist will give you a local anesthetic in order to numb your tooth and the area that surrounds it. While you can certainly talk to your dentist if you are concerned about pain, it should feel similar to having a cavity filled.
No, You Can't Have Antibiotics Instead
Some people feel that they should just be able to use antibiotics to treat their infection, but antibiotics won't be able to reach the pulp infection because they need access via the blood. Unfortunately, this means that antibiotics aren't a feasible alternative.
You Might Be Sore AfterSome discomfort can be expected after your root canal, but this should subside within a couple of days. Over the counter pain medication like ibuprofen or Tylenol will usually do the trick when it comes to eliminating the problem.
Your Tooth Can Still Be Damaged in the FutureSome people believe that the crown placed on their tooth after a root canal makes the tooth indestructible, but that simply isn't true. The underlying tooth is still susceptible to decay, so proper oral health is a necessity. When cared for properly, a crown can last from 10-15 years or even longer.
