Why Are There Dark Spots on My Teeth?

A woman smoking and causing dark spots on her teeth to form.Do you have dark spots on your teeth? If so, your dentist may be able to recommend treatment options to remove them, but it is important to determine how they got there to begin with. By identifying the cause, you can prevent them from reoccurring in the future.

Causes of Dark Spots On Teeth

There are a variety of reasons that dark spots might be popping up on your teeth, and depending on the underlying issue, treatment options will vary:

•  Fluorosis. This condition results when patients ingest too much fluoride, generally during childhood.
•  Dental decay or cavities. If you have a tooth with decay, you might notice a small dark spot to begin with. If left untreated, this small dark spot can become a major discoloration.
•  Smoking. Tobacco of any variety is dangerous to your health, but it can also cause a lot of damage to your teeth. In addition to the aesthetic problems, including spots on the teeth, gum disease, oral cancer, and a variety of other problems could result.
•  Plaque and tartar accumulation. When food is left on the teeth, dental plaque could result. Over time, this plaque will harden and can build-up on the teeth. The end result could be discoloration.
•  Medications. Certain medications are well-known for staining the teeth. Tetracycline, for example, has a long history of causing dark spots and discolorations on the teeth.
•  Food and drink. Certain drinks - including soda, tea, red wine, and coffee - can stain your teeth, as can foods like tomatoes and berries.

If you have dark spots on your teeth, brushing and flossing can go a long way to preventing future issues. You should also be sure to check with your dentist to see what options are available to correct these issues and to restore your teeth to their original shade of white.
