Porcelain Veneers in Columbia MDAre you uncomfortable or self-conscious about your smile? You may want to consider porcelain veneers! Porcelain veneers are very thin shells that are bonded to the surface of your teeth to improve esthetics. Veneers can help change the length, size, and shape of your teeth, offering you the chance to completely reinvent your smile. Veneers are best suited for anterior (front) teeth and offer a conservative alternative to dental crowns.
Why Porcelain Veneers
Veneers can be used to fix several cosmetic issues:
Porcelain is a stain resistant material that mimics the appearance of a natural tooth. We can shade it to match your existing teeth, or we brighten up your smile with a new shade. Porcelain is also well tolerated by your gum tissue, reducing the risk of infection. Veneers do eventually need to be replaced, but they are durable, and can last up to 15 years!
Veneers can also be treated like your natural teeth. You can brush and floss them without having to use any specialized tools, unlike other restorations. Because they are individually fitted, it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a veneer and a natural tooth.
Process of Receiving Porcelain Veneers
To receive veneers, you will need to come in for two office visits. During the first visit, we will do an examination and determine if veneers are right for you. You will explain your desired smile, and we will work together to achieve that goal. Once we have come to a decision, we will begin by preparing your teeth. We have to lightly buff and reshape the surface of your tooth to compensate for the veneer. Then we take impressions or molds of your teeth. These are shipped off to a dental laboratory where your final restoration will be fabricated. This process can take 2 to 4 weeks. Under certain circumstances, we can give you a temporary restoration while you wait.
During the second visit, we will apply a special liquid to each tooth. This helps ensure that the veneers will properly bond to the surface. We will then place the veneers onto each tooth, and make sure your new smile is aligned and exactly the way you want it. Once the alignment is correct, we can apply the cement to the surface of the tooth and place the veneer. We use a special curing light to help the cement harden and bond quickly.
After we have finished, Dr. Lisa Crafton will give you special care instructions. You will be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure that your gums are accepting the veneers.
