How to Care for Teeth With Braces

When you have braces and retainers, the wires, brackets, rubber bands, springs and aligners act like a magnet for food and plaque in your mouth. Food and plaque can stain your teeth, cause decay, and other oral health issues.

Brushing and Flossing
You should brush after each meal and every snack. An electric toothbrush is strongly recommended. A proxybrush can be added to your routine for those tight, in-between spots where a regular brush just won't fit. Flossing is a bit of a challenge, but is most effective when done at least once a day. Orthodontic floss or a floss threader may help you get the job done more easily. After brushing and flossing, always check your teeth in the mirror to make sure you do not miss anything. If you are unable to brush after a meal, be sure to rinse well with water, and brush as soon as you are able to.

Foods to Avoid
Actually, most foods are available to you while you have your braces, but you'll want to make sure that hard to bite items are cut small. There are a few foods, though, that should be avoided when wearing braces, including: sodas and sweets (cause decay), hard candies, ice, whole nuts (break wires and loosening brackets), and super chewy foods like gum, caramel and other sticky candies (difficult to remove when they stick to braces).

Caring for your teeth, braces and retainers can be simple and will keep your teeth healthy and good looking.
