UV Toothbrush Sanitizers: Do They Work?

Posted on 6/17/2016 by Heather Erickson
A collection of toothbrushes inside a jar.Are you worried about bacteria colonizing on our toothbrush? In some ways, it makes sense - your toothbrush is kept in your bathroom, which is one of the germiest places in your house. If germs access your toothbrush and then you put that brush in your mouth, you might be at risk of getting sick.

UV toothbrush sanitizing manufacturers want you to feel nervous about what might be living on your toothbrush. They want you to believe that their UV light sanitation devices are the best way to keep your brush clean, but do they really work?

Researchers Take a Look at UV Toothbrush Sanitation

Studies published in several dental journals do indicate that UV sanitizers are effective at killing microorganisms and bacteria. Unfortunately, while they might reduce the amount of these organisms off of your brush, the UV lights that are designed specifically for toothbrushes won't eliminate all of these germs. In fact, other sanitizing options have been found to be just as successful, sometimes even more so.

Other Ways to Keep Your Toothbrush Safe

If you don't want to invest in a toothbrush sanitizer, there are other ways that you can keep your toothbrush safe while minimizing the bacteria that live on them.

One of the best ways is to use mouthwash. Simply soaking your toothbrush in mouthwash for 20 minutes is an affordable option and can usually produce even better results than a UV sanitizer.

Another good option is to run your toothbrush through the dishwasher. This has been shown to eliminate a majority of the bacteria found on your brush.

Ultimately, if you are thinking about investing in a UV toothbrush sanitizer, it is completely up to you whether you think this investment is worth it or not. Just make sure you do your consumer research first to ensure you are getting an effective and reliable model.
